Northport, Alabama is a small town located next to Tuscaloosa. I live
in Tuscaloosa and my husband and I own an art gallery in Northport. The
original downtown area of Northport is designated a historic district and
underwent extensive renovation in late 2000/early 2001. To raise funds for
this renovation, "items" were offered for sale and my husband purchased a
beautiful lamppost. This purchase was his gift to me for Christmas 1999!
He told me he purchased the lamppost because he thought I would like to
designate it as a Memorial to my father and the crew of DE 353. Do I have
to tell you how hard I cried? I know it seems strange that a Memorial to DE 353 is located in Northport, AL, but what is important to me is that it exists, no matter where it is located. I am dedicated to preserving the memory of this ship and her fine crew. I will never forget. My family and I gathered Memorial Day weekend, 2000, and held a dedication ceremony for the DE 353 Memorial. This time I was not the only one who cried. Also present for the dedication was the "next" generation of our family, the grandchildren. It was wonderful to have them present. They had lots of questions about the 353. They are now well indoctrinated. Notice the grey duct tape on the lamppost? Well, the grandchildren
decided the lamppost needed to be decorated with their grandfather's photo
and the Flag. Leave it to the "boys" to come up the idea of using duct
tape! They were so serious and proud of their project that I did not say a
word about the tacky tape. :) |
