And she was Christened USS Doyle C.
Barnes DE-353!
What a wonderful expression on Mrs. Barnes' face
I asked for help identifying the meaning of the numbers on the ship's hull. On
September 13, 2000, I received a response to my question from John B. Clark,
Jr., a former Barnes crewmember. About these numbers he stated, "I am probably
wrong, but my guess is that the numbers indicate the distance in feet above her
keel. I recall seeing these numbers on the stem and noticed similar numbers on
the stern, and I believe they refer to her draft. The full-length photo of the
starboard side of the Barnes shows what appears to be numbers on her stem. My
memory tells me that the Barnes drew between nine and ten feet, depending on her
fuel load."
After further research, I found that Mr.
Clark is correct!
