Commissioning Ceremonies:
1515 The designated Representative of the Commandant, Eighth Naval
District (The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, U. S. Navy, Captain J. M.
Shelling, U. S. Navy Ret.), came on board with commissioning party,
namely, Harvey Cranfill, Vice President and Manager of Consolidated Steel
Corporation Ltd., Orange, Texas, made a brief speech and turned the ship
over to the Commandant, Eighth Naval District Representative. The
Commandant's representative read his orders from the Commandant, Eighth
Naval District, to act as his representative in accepting the vessel for
commissioning. The Commandant's Representative caused the national ensign
to be hoisted in accordance with Article 286, U. S. Navy Regulations. The
Commandant's Representative then turned the vessel over to Lieutenant
Commander John P. Ingle, D-V(G), U.S.N.R., which officer is ordered to
command. Lieutenant Commander John P. Ingle, D-V(G), U.S.N.R., read his
orders (Reference Orders Pers 31322-EK-6 of 25 May 1944) to assume command
of this vessel and assumed command. The Commanding Officer ordered the
Executive Officer to set the watch. 1545 Watch set, first section. 1550
The Commissioning Party departed from the ship. The officers and enlisted
personnel attached to this vessel on date of commissioning are as follows
in the lists appended to the opposite page and below.

Moored port side to City Docks, Orange, Texas. No. 1 boiler steaming for
auxiliary purposes. 1630 - O'KEY, William Nelson, S2c, [service number
omitted], USNR, reported aboard for duty under custody of naval armed
guard, having been tried by a summary court martial and found guilty of
being AOL from 0745, 19 June 1944 until 1645, 26 June 1945**, a period of
7 days 9 hours, and as a result was awarded punishment to the extent of
being confined for a period of two months and to be reduced to next
inferior rating. Convening authority approved said sentence, but the
period of confinement was reduced to thirty days. Accordingly, O'KEY was
reduced to seaman second class and received aboard ship to be confined
until 0800, 2 August 1944.
