In August, 1986, the first and only volume of the DE 353 Newsletter was published and edited by Bill Dickey. The newsletter included a biography of John P. Ingle, Lt. Cmd., and a short history of DE 353. Also, Mr. Dickey was attempting to create a mailing list of former shipmates and he included a list of known deceased shipmates.   I believe the ratings listed are those at the time of discharge because most differ from the rating listed at commissioning.

During my research, I have learned of other shipmates who have sailed their final sea since 1986. I have included my list at the bottom of this page. I was very sad to find Mr. Dickey among those who are no longer with us.  He died in 1993.
The ratings I have included may not be the rating at discharge. When I did not know the most current rate of the individual I used the rate noted at commissioning.

DE 353 NEWSLETTER

VOLUME 1, Issue 1 August 1986                                                       Edited by: Bill Dickey

A MAILING LIST - NOT YET

DE 353 enlisted personnel microfilm has been received from National Archives. It shows 188 enlisted men were aboard for commissioning, 13 July 1944. Prior to decommissioning, 15 January 1947, 254 more had signed aboard. Twenty two officers served during this time.

Over 400 letters were sent to VA Regional Office, Waco, TX for forwarding to shipmates that VA had an address for. The results are in - the news is not good. VA records show 102 shipmates deceased (3 listed as deceased were not). Our dear friends will be missed but they won't be forgotten - they will always be with us in our memories.

Between DESA and the VA, we have located 81 of the crew. Individuals and telephone directories have turned up 18 more. Time is not on our side and we have a lot of people to locate. Let us do it now while we still can - before it is too late. Let us leave no stone unturned until we locate all who served about the Barnes.

As you can see, it will be sometime before we can have a mailing list. That doesn't keep us from looking - using our personnel roster as a guide. Try to remember where the guys were from in your duty station. If you have the city, use telephone directories located in libraries and telephone offices. If you have only the state, try the Driver's License Bureau for that state.

Some who served aboard may not be listed. Please bring them to my attention ASAP.
