Recently, my sister found a long lost box of my father's photographs. This was a happy happy day for my family. We thought the photos had been destroyed in her house fire several years ago. Unfortunately, the photos have no information written on the back. Also, Mr. Elmer J. Norgard, a former crewmember, mailed me some wonderful photos! He was unable to identify the crewmembers in some of the photos. However, he could identify crewmembers in some photos and these photos are located Here. If you can help me identify the shipmates in the photos, please let me know. I have copied the photos to a CD, so you can have your own personal copy! Just pop the CD into your computer CD-ROM and you can view all the photos. If you would like for me to send you a CD, just let me know. There is no charge. This is a labor of love and my way to honor the crew of DE 353. If you have photos to share with me, please let me know! Click on a photo to view a

My mother remembers my father showing her these photos and telling her that these men were Australian POWs rescued when the crew of the USS Doyle C. Barnes took part in the Liberation of Borneo. May 2003 - I have finally been able to substantiate this story from a document written by Comdr. John P. Ingle. The entry reads as follows: " The end of the war found this ship anchored in Victoria Harbor, Brunei Bay, British North Borneo. You participated in the surrender of a large Japanese force in the Kuching
area, aiding in its occupation by transporting to Kuching the Commander of the Australian Relief Forces, Brigadier Eastick, his staff and a portion of the Australian troops. Returning from
Kuching your ship carried the vanguard of released Allied prisoners of war to Labuan Island for hospitalization. Later another trip was made to transport additional troops." |
