DEs were broken down into six design groups/classes based upon armament and power plant configurations. The Class name originated from the name of the
first DE of that design group. For example, USS John C. Butler DE 339 has the first hull number of that group.
1. GMT (Diesel electric tandem motor drive - short hull) - EVARTS class
2. TE ( Turbine electric drive, 3" guns) - BUCKLEY class
3. TEV (Turbine electric drive, 5" guns) - RUDDERROW class
4. FMR (Fairbanks Morse diesel reverse gear drive) - EDSALL class
5. DET (Diesel electric tendem motor drive, 3" guns - long hull) - CANNON class
6. WGT (gear turbine drive, 5" guns) - JOHN C. BUTLER class
(Turbines were built by General Electric or Westinghouse and were interchangeable as
units)
DE 353 was a WGT - John C. Butler Class destroyer escort. Her turbines were built by General Electric.

*Note: I am not sure this is an accurate description of the ship's
armament. I
found many conflicting documents. I have US Navy documentation showing 1
quad and 3 twin 40 mm AA mounts were ordered when the ship was built.
However, I cannot find documentation proving all these guns were ever
mounted on the ship.
