A. M. Northcutt, Old Pioneer Died at De Leon Home
A. M. Northcutt, father of R.
L. Northcutt of this city, died at his home near the North Ward school at 7:30
o'clock p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 1929. Death came as a result of a stroke of
paralysis suffered three days previously. While he had not been ill prior to that
time, he had been practically blind for seventeen years. He is survived by his wife
and eight sons and daughters and two brothers.
A. M. Northcutt had every right to the title of "pioneer". He was born in
Tallapossa County, Ala., and moved from there when quite young to Georgia. In the
year 1870 his father, Rev. Northcutt, joined an overland party composed
of the families of Carruth, Nunnelley, Pounds, Barker, Northcutt and
perhaps others, coming to Texas in wagons. On the way young Northcutt became ill in
Louisiana and his father remained with him expecting him to die, while the wagon train
came on to Texas. He recovered and while in Louisiana was converted and some time
later became a member of the Missionary Baptist church, living a devoted, consecrated
Christian life. He was a deacon in his church for almost half a century.
The family first settled on the "Big Bend" of the Brazos not far from Granbury.
After three years they came to the Liveoak community six or seven miles east of
DeLeon and made their home, the Rev. Northcutt preaching in the pioneer
churches, his several sons doing their part toward carving out the wilderness a home that
would be worthy of their efforts civilizing and Christianizing the community.
Twenty-four years ago Mr. Northcutt moved with his family to ?..tchell county and
continued to reside there until two years ago when he returned to make his home in DeLeon.
As an evidence of the richness of this good man's life, many people came when it was known
that he was no more and asked the privilege of helping to dig his grave. Many were
the incidents recounted there that day of acts of helpfulness and love he had rendered
during his long and useful life. "A life rich in service of God and charity to
his fellow man", is the manner in which he is spoken of.
His body was laid to rest in the family burying ground on the old homestead near Liveoak
on Jan. 17. A large number of old-time friends came to mingle their tears with the striken
family.
Living children are as follows: Mrs. S. A. Pool, Lubbock;
Mrs. W. A. Spencer, O'Donnell; J. A. Northcutt, San Angelo; R. L. Northcutt,
DeLeon; J. C. Northcutt, Colorado City; B. Northcutt, San Angelo; Mrs.
J. T. Bingham, O'Donnell; Mrs. Lee Edwards, Moran.
