ELIAS DUBOSE

Elias DuBose was born prior to 1827, when his name was recorded in a deed in the Darlington County Courthouse. The transaction, recorded in Book K, page 126, was a sale of land to trusteesof the Cypress Meeting House (church) which, at that time, was located on said land. Elias DuBose and M.M. Harris were the land owners.

The following transaction is taken word for word, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, from the book A Sketch of Cypress Church and Cemetery by the late Frances Lea Huff Bouknight: Elias DuBose and H.H. Harris to J. Belk et al, South Carolina, Darlington District:

Know all men by these presents that we Elias DuBose and Harmon H. Harris of the State and district aforesaid planters and in commiseration of the sum of Five dollars to us in hand paid by Jeremiah Belk, Abram Beasley, William Brockinton, Allen Floyd, and William Northcutt, Trustees of the State and district aforesaid have granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sell and release unto the said J. Belk, A. Beasley, Wm. Brockinton, A. Floyd and W. Northcutt, Trustees and their successors forever a certain piece of land on which the Cypress Meeting house now stands for the benefit of the Methodist Episcopal Church having the following marks viz/ commencing on a black Jack near the public road from thence S.S.E. about 225 feet to a pine thence W.S.W. about 159 feet to a stake N.N.W. about 225 feet to the first name black Jack said land being in the State and district aforesaid on the N.W. side of the big Cypress together with all the rights and privileges thereunto belonging to have and to hold, they, the said Trustees and their successors forever and we the sd. Elias DuBose and Harmon H. Harris do bind ourselves and heirs and Executors to warrant and forever defend the sd. premises to the said Trustees and their successors for the purpose mentioned in writings wherefore we have hereunto set our hand and seals this first day of March in the year of our Lord 1827 and in the fifty first of American Independence - Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of (signatures of Briton Harris, Elisha Skinner, Harmon H. Harris, Elias DuBose)
